Message From The Department Secretary
Rev. Carmichael Crutchfield, Ph.D.
The General Conference of 2014 added a Connectional Educational Council to the organization of the Department of Christian Education. This council’s primary responsibility is to implement the program of the Department of Christian Education in his or her Episcopal District.
At the 2018 General Conference the name of the Department and Boards of Christian Education were changed to add Formation to the name. This is not merely a name change, but a change in our understanding of the work of Christian Educators.
At this same conference the name of Sunday Church School was changed to Church School. The emphasis is on Church and School and not Sunday. This hopefully will expand our thinking about when the lessons providing to the denomination may be taught.
At the 2018 General Conference the Episcopal Address focused on Getting Back to the Basics. Much of that emphases was placed on the work in the Department of Christian Education. In an unprecedented recommendation from the College of Bishops two of the Department’s resources were commended to the church for use. They are “21st Century Discipleship (a three- book resource) and “It’s All About Discipleship.” This resource is part of a four-part curriculum on Discipleship. All of these resources are available through our website.
